The Community Case Management (CCM) Program, funded primarily through a grant from the Global Fund and implemented by Caminando Con Niños in 2008, is now in full swing. Through this program, Caminando Con Niños provides numerous support services for HIV affected children and their families in and around Tegucigalpa, Honduras, including:
* Nutritional Support: Regularly conduct nutritional evaluations and provide nutritional counseling, supplemental food baskets, multi-vitamins, powdered milk, and infant formula to participants in need. Monitor childrens’ growth to facilitate healthy growth and development.
* Informational Support: Overwhelmed by illness and poverty, many simply do not know where to turn for necessary services. In addition to the direct services provided by Caminando Con Niños, Walking With Children maintains a list of governmental, community and medical organizations with whom we work to offer additional help to those in need. By working with other organizations within the HIV/AIDS community, we are able to refer CCM participants to additional organizations that may be able to help them.
* Medical Support: Access to anti-retroviral medication and medication counseling, home visits/evaluations, referral to medical agencies, monetary support.
* Support for the Future: Helping CCM participants to help themselves. We provide educational scholarships, vocational scholarships and vocational training so they may learn a trade or occupation and better support themselves and their families.
* Legal & Advocacy Services: Guardianship plans for children, representation in court proceedings, and advocacy services when HIV stigma becomes an issue.
* Spiritual & Emotional Support: Those affected by HIV face a difficult battle, even more difficult when magnified by problems stemming from poverty. How does one maintain health without proper nutrition? What if there is no money to buy food? Beyond that, how does one look forward to the future when affected by a disease with no cure?
Walking With Children helps ease the crisis and facilitate a normal life. In addition to assistance with basic needs like food and medicine, through direct communication and counseling by the staff of Caminando Con Niños, Walking With Children addresses the spiritual and emotional needs of those we serve. Through faith and prayer can come strength and healing during difficult times. Psychological assistance and counseling is provided when needed. Many have expressed heartfelt appreciation to Caminando Con Niños for walking this spiritual and emotional journey with them.
In conjunction with Walking With Children, Caminando Con Niños currently serves more than 1,500 individuals, more than 700 of them children, living with or vulnerable as a result of HIV in the Central District of Tegucigalpa.
Committed to Their Success
Walking With Children is committed to the care and development of these children but we need your support. As an organization that relies on donations from individuals you can play a major role in not only saving a life but giving each child the opportunity to make the most of it.
In addition to your financial support, you can help us spread the word about our cause. The best way we can work together to help children living with HIV/AIDS in Central America is to increase the world’s awareness.
